Cruelty-Free Products Myth Busting

August 22, 2018

A common question clients ask us is “How do I know if a product is Cruelty-free?”

My answer is always ‘do your own research ‘ as sales assistants are often misled themselves.

As a rule of thumb, all companies that  sell in mainland China produce products tested on animals regardless of what they say or what they state on their packaging, the reason being all cosmetics, hair dye etc by law must be tested on animals to be sold in China.

There are a few things you can do to find out if a company is trying to pull the wool over your eyes. The most simple being ask google if a certain product is tested on animals, the answer should be a simple yes or no.

An exception to this is the ‘parent company’ i.e. if a smaller company is bought out by a larger company  in some cases the small company may be allowed to keep their ethos and not be sold in China but you are still in effect giving your money to the giant behind the scenes, I was recently caught out by this.

Another sneaky thing companies do is say “product not tested on animals” the product in its final state has not been tested on animals but in fact each individual ingredient has been. For these companies it is about misleading you via marketing rather then being committed to being a cruelty-free company.

One of our fave websites for checking products is www.crueltyfreekitty.com they keep an up-to date record of companies that are cruelty-free as well as some interesting articles on product companies and their status.

At earth organic we only sell and use products that are cruelty-free, our current faves are DeLorenzo, Angel En Provence  the Awapuhi range from Paul Mitchell.

There are a number of apps you can download that are great, namely CCF, Cruelty-Free and Safe CF.
